<abstract>Conservation Opportunity Areas (COA) are places in Wisconsin that contain ecological features, natural communities, or Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) habitat for which Wisconsin has a unique responsibility for protecting. The identification and subsequent mapping of these areas will allow managers to make the most efficient use of resources by targeting conservation action work to benefit SGCN and their habitats. Sites were identified by an interdisciplinary team and involved input from various DNR staff, along with public input. This work was a continuation of the "Ecological Priorities" identified in the Wisconsin Wildlife Action Plan (see http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/er/wwap/ for more information).</abstract>
<purpose>The data were created to provide cartographic representations of Wisconsin's priority areas for protection and management of SGCN. The 2008 version is specific to Wisconsin's Wildlife Action Plan (WWAP) Implementation Priorities for 2008-2015. Areas were mapped using the best available data and science at the time. Specific objectives for the data were to:
1. Develop a digital data layer that identifies the best places in the state (Conservation Opportunity Areas) to implement priority conservation actions from the Wisconsin Wildlife Action Plan (WDNR 2006).
2. Create maps at both statewide and ecological landscape scales, highlighting the Conservation Opportunity Areas and linking them with the priority conservation actions.
3. Provide focus for future efforts to protect SGCN and their habitats.
4. Provide focus for making decisions on how and where to spend future State Wildlife Grant funds.</purpose>
<supplinf>The COA polygons contained within this dataset were mapped at broad scales (1:100-300,000) and have not been ground-truthed for accuracy. As such, they should only be used as a tool in determining the approximate boundaries of COAs. Boundaries are not DNR acquisition or feasibility study boundaries. Future GIS work will focus on boundary refinement and ground-truthing to more accurately delineate COAs especially with regard to habitat type, habitat quality, species presence and land classification. These data are not intended to be used at small scales (generally &lt; 1:100,000). For guidance, users should refer to the WWAP Implementation website (http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/er/wwap/implementation/) and Ecological Landscape Reports (http://dnr.wi.gov/landscapes) for specific information on the natural communities and SGCN that are targeted for protection and management within each COA. Terrestrial Dataset: The Terrestrial dataset contains one polygon type feature class: COA_Terrestrial. Polygons were digitized on-screen using digital topographic and orthophotographic raster imagery.
Aquatic Dataset: The Aquatics dataset contains three feature classes: COA_Lakes (polygon features), COA_RiverSystems (line features), and Great_Lakes (polygon). The Lakes and River Systems data were compiled using the Wisconsin DNR Hydrography Geodata Version 6. The Great Lakes data is included for cartographic purposes only.
